What are Fascial Adhesions?
Fascia is the fibrous connective tissue that surrounds the muscles and tissues of the body. Fascia is the framework that supports the muscular system, nervous system, and cardiovascular system. It is the shiny membrane that can be seen on the outside of a chicken breast. Fascial restriction can occur after injury, from postural stress, and chronic muscle tension. These fascial adhesions and restrictions place torque on other tissues in the body. Fascial restriction is like cheesecloth that has been pulled on from opposite corners, which causes the fabric to become distorted. This increased torque causes the body to lay down extra tissue known as adhesions and fibrosis, which may result in decreased mobility, restriction, and pain.
Why should I worry about unhealthy collagen fibers?
Collagen is the building blocks of our muscles, tendons, fascia, and all connective tissue. When collagen is damaged through overuse, injury, and chronic micro-tearing, the body lays down scar tissue to repair the damage. In order to improve tendon and myofascial health, the poor quality and disorganized tissue should be mechanically broken apart so that new tissue can be laid down. In addition to using the Wave Tool, a comprehensive plan for improving tissue health could include stretching, trigger point release, cupping, working the tendon and muscle complex with eccentric muscle contractions, and progressive loading in order to improve the tensile strength and tolerance of the new collagen fibers.

How can the Wave Tool help my pain?
The soft tissue in your body includes your muscles, tendons, fascia, and skin. Soft tissue restriction, adhesions, and fibrosis can lead to decreased blood flow, decreased tissue oxygenation, decreased tissue mobility, and neural compression. The scraping edges of the Wave tool therapeutically address these restrictions and adhesions through selectively breaking up the poor-quality tissue while preserving the healthy tissue. The edges improve tissue health by stimulating fibroblasts (cells that lay down new tissue) and fibroclasts (cells that remove old tissue). Cellular activity can increase, tissue oxygenation can improve, and your body’s ability to heal and repair itself can increase. Additionally, the Guasha spoon and Massage features of the Wave Tool can help decrease muscle tension and increase blood flow.
